There are mixed views on the debacle of Washington D.C.’s Lottery sports betting app. Could the Washington D.C. Lottery look to other jurisdictions for guidance since it has a lot of work to do to regain trust?
Can GameBet DC Use Oregon’s Sports Betting Market for Guidance?
GameBet DC had issues with their app during the Super Bowl as the app wasn’t working for IOS users. Thankfully, bettors across the nation’s capital were able to wager at retail sportsbook locations if they were near these sporting venues.
FanDuel also entered the market and will have an in-person sportsbook location at one of the club locations at Audi Field. The retail sportsbook location is set to open with their partnership with the MLS club, D.C. United. Wayne Rooney will also be making his coaching debut Sunday against Orlando City.
Bettors across Oregon don’t have many options as some other states offer to their residents. Its one app, however, didn’t get the ratings it wanted during its operation, so a much-needed change was made to attract more potential customers across Beaver State.
DraftKings is one of the nation’s most reliable platforms as the bookmaker is one of the top sportsbooks in many states across the industry.
It was a clear upgrade from Scoreboard, which was powered by SBTech. DraftKings interface is certainly more user-friendly for the average bettor and those who use the platform often.
The Oregon Lottery was fortunate to have DraftKings acquire SBTech, as the timing couldn’t be more perfect. By January, DraftKings had become the lone operator in Oregon.
Could the D.C. Market Go Under Significant Changes?
The D.C. Lottery could look to Oregon’s market for guidance as the nation’s capital awarded Intralot a contract. The D.C. market could go through significant changes as the goal is to make potential bettors stay away from unregulated markets.
The market could allow reputable sportsbooks like FanDuel, BetMGM, and other operators to launch their mobile platforms in the area. The council members have witnessed that GameBet DC has slashed the revenue projections for the time being.
This would mean that there are fewer users on the platform, and the bettors are looking for alternatives. Have online platforms like FanDuel.
BetMGM and others would bring up the revenue numbers. Oregon may not have multiple sportsbooks operating all at once; however, DraftKings is one of the most used sportsbooks in the industry.
Will the Nation’s Capital Make the Change?
The generated tax revenue is the key component of keeping the operation going. Consumers having bad experiences could be a sign that changes are necessary. Oregon’s situation may offer some guidance, but the market could look at other neighboring states.
Virginia and Maryland both have sports betting markets. However, Maryland is one of the more interesting ones as the state only has retail sports betting at the moment.
Lawmakers have made significant progress in Maryland’s push for mobile sports betting as the Old Line State has yet to reach its full potential. If Maryland also goes mobile, the market will offer its residents and visitors multiple options to choose from. Offering multiple platforms may be the best alternative for the jurisdiction as it would drive up revenue.
