Mets Hanging on by Thread, Yankees Fairly Secure in Battle for Playoffs

It’s the final month of the 2021 MLB regular season, and the playoff fate for both the New York Mets and Yankees will be decided in the coming weeks. The Mets once looked like a lock for the postseason, while the Yankees have been fighting against it all season long.

Those roles are now reversed as September has begun, but there is still time for both teams from New York to sneak into the playoff field. The best option for both teams is picking up a Wild Card berth, which will force them to have to work to get into the Divisional Series.

The Yankees currently hold the top Wild Card spot in the American League as they are 1.5 games over the Boston Red Sox. That has given New York a 4.5 game cushion over the Oakland Athletics for the second spot.

The Mets trail the Reds by four games for the second NL Wild Card spot, but they also have three teams in front of them to deal with.

Division Titles Not Looking Good

The Yankees could still find a way to win the AL East, but it is going to take a major collapse from the

Tampa Bay Rays to do so. New York is now +550 to win the East while the Rays are -750.

The Mets have fallen all the way down to +1000 to win the NL East this season, and they were the

favorites for much of the first half. That title now belongs to the Atlanta Braves as they are -310.

Dodgers Clear Title Favorites

The Los Angeles Dodgers have finally caught the San Francisco Giants in the NL West Division, and that has increased their odds of winning the World Series. The Dodgers have been the title favorites since the preseason, and it’s hard to see them losing in the playoffs.los angeles dodgers

Currently, the Dodgers are listed at +270 to win the World Series, and the Houston Astros are next on the list at +410. The Yankees have seen their odds bounce around all season long, but they are now fifth on the list with title odds set at +850.

The Mets have odds set at +10000 to win the World Series, and they were once a team that had odds right up there with the Yankees.

Cole a Cy Young Favorite

There was a brief time this season in which Gerrit Cole had his struggles for the Yankees, but he does appear to be back on track. Cole is now the big favorite to win the AL Cy Young Award, with odds set at -280.

Robbie Ray of the Toronto Blue Jays is next on the list at +370, but it feels like cole already has this award locked up, barring a major collapse.

Jacob DeGrom is not going to win the NL Cy Young Award despite putting up ridiculous stats to begin the season. Walker Buehler (-120) and Corbin Burnes (+200) are the top betting picks to win that award in the National League.
